The Gardens and Park of Linderhof—the park at the highest elevation in Germany—rank among the greatest examples of garden design from the period of Historicism. Between 1872 and 1880, landscape architect Carl von Effner created a parkscape in the Ammergau Alps modeled on English gardens. In the central area surrounding the palace, he utilized Baroque and Renaissance landscape designs.
